He is the grandson of the founder of Tenuta San Guido, the producer of the infamous Super-Tuscan brand Sassicaia in Italy. After a sampling of Patagonian wines in New York, Piero was inspired to launch his own label in the relatively underdeveloped region. In 2004, he founded Bodega Chacra, nestled in the Rio Negro Valley of northern Patagonia. The unique terroir, with alluvial soils composed of limestone, sand, and clay, benefits from the arid, desert climate and crystal-clear air. The valleys naturally phylloxera-free environment and minimal rainfall create perfect conditions for organic and biodynamic viticulture. Pieros first purchase was a neglected Pinot Noir vineyard planted in 1932, which he restored to its former glory, leading to the expansion of Chacras holdings, which now include additional old vine vineyards from 1955 and 1967.

The winemaking at Chacra emphasizes minimal intervention, with native yeast fermentation and aging in a mix of cement vats and Burgundian oak barrels. Pieros dedication to traditional methods and his passion for the land have resulted in pure, expressive wines that bridge the gap between New and Old World styles. Cincuenta y Cinco (55) comes from vineyards planted in 1955 which gently rest on a sea of pebbles, typical in riverbed soils. It is fermented whole cluster at very low temperatures, enhancing the floral characteristics of the wine. Cincuenta y Cinco holds energy and tension while remaining easily approachable, a truly difficult balance to strike in Pinot Noir. Aromas of dried strawberry, crushed blueberry and cherry fruit mingle with undertones of smoke, game and minerality. Aged for 11 months in concrete tanks for 50%, and 50% in 2nd, 3rd and 4th use French oak barrels, the wine is juicy across the palate, with lifted acidity and a lightness on the palate. This Pinot finishes with a long, balanced finish perfect for pairing with chicken or duck, or light seafood dishes including salmon or scallops. —Simi Grewal

Veso creates limited-edition aperitifs inspired by natural landscapes and botanicals. After graduate study at UC Davis — where his 1979 thesis on how wine aromas evolve in bottle remains in use today — David trained with the Moueix family at Château Pétrus, absorbing the Bordelais principles of terroir fidelity and minimal intervention that would define his entire career. Back in California, he systematically introduced techniques then radical in the state: whole-cluster pressing of white grapes, native yeast fermentations, sur lie barrel aging, and full malolactic fermentation of Chardonnay — techniques now widely adopted across the industry, earning him the designation "Professor Chardonnay" from Wine Spectator and formal recognition in the Congressional Record. After landmark stints at Simi, Matanzas Creek, Chalk Hill, Dominus Estate, and Rudd Estate, David launched Ramey Wine Cellars with 260 cases of Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay. As of 2021, the winery and estate vineyard at Westside Farms passed to the second generation, with Claire and Alan Ramey assuming co-presidency. Winemaker Cameron Frey, who joined Ramey prior to the 2002 harvest, continues to lead production. Of its almost 100 hectares, only 54 are planted to the vine, the rest preserved as fields, forests, and ponds in order to maintain a natural ecological equilibrium. Located in the once renowned commune of Saint Cibard, Le Puy produces most of its wines under the Francs—Côtes de Bordeaux AOC, though, like so many of our traditional producers in the region, the estate finds itself compelled to move toward labeling its wines as Vins de France. The very existence of Château Le Puy almost defies belief. Today, four separate Gros estates bear the family name — Gros Frère et Sœur, Anne Gros, Michel Gros, and A.F. Gros — all descending from the partition of Domaine Louis Gros in 1963. Gros Frère et Sœur was born that year when Colette and Gustave Gros combined their shares of the estate. When Gustave died unexpectedly in 1984, their 22-year-old nephew Bernard took the helm, replanting all the estate's parcels with superior clones and expanding the holdings by 12 hectares through the acquisition of land in the hamlet of Concoeur-et-Corboin in the Hautes Côtes de Nuits — precisely the parcel that gives rise to this cuvée. Bernard handed the domaine to his children Elodie and Vincent in 2010; they represent the 7th generation and have further refined the estate's direction, eliminating herbicides, ploughing all soils, and continuing Bernard's commitment to unfiltered wines.
