Elvio Cogno 'Cascina Nuova' Barolo, Piemonte, Italy 2019
The Cogno family has farmed vineyards in the Langhe for four generations. Elvio Cogno, a figure of considerable influence in Piedmontese winemaking, established the estate in Novello within the celebrated Ravera cru — today the most prominent single-vineyard zone of the Novello township and a MeGA (Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva) recognized under DOCG regulations. With eleven and a half hectares in Ravera, Cogno is the most significant producer in that cru. The estate is now directed by Elvio's daughter Nadia Cogno and her husband Valter Fissore, who have deepened the commitment to traditional methods while maintaining the elegance and freshness that are hallmarks of the Cogno style. Four Barolo labels are produced: Cascina Nuova, Ravera, Bricco Pernice, and the rare single-vineyard Vigna Elena. Cascina Nuova — the historical name of the estate itself and the zone of younger vines within the Ravera cru — is the entry point to the range, conceived as an accessible, immediately expressive Barolo that nonetheless reflects the full character of the terroir.
- Winemaker: Valter Fissore; with Nadia Cogno
- Farming: Traditional viticulture, organically minded. Guyot-trained vines at 4,000 per hectare, 380m elevation. Hand harvested.
- Variety: Nebbiolo 100%
- Terroir: Barolo DOCG, Ravera MeGA, Novello, Piemonte, Italy. The Ravera cru is one of the most respected sites in the Barolo zone — recognized for producing wines of strength, elegance, and longevity. Cogno's Cascina Nuova parcels within Ravera are planted to younger vines; the steep hillside terrain features soils rich in Helvetian marl and limestone, yielding wines of notable freshness and aromatic precision even at this entry level. The 2019 vintage brought a balanced growing season — adequate spring rains, two moderate July heat events, and a mild summer with sporadic rainfall — producing Nebbiolo with good sugar levels and optimal polyphenolic structure at harvest.
- Vinification: Fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel with 100% indigenous yeasts, with automatic pump-overs. Post-fermentation maceration for 30 days with submerged cap.
- Aging: 24 months in large seasoned French oak casks (botti); 12 months additional bottle aging before release. Unfined.
- Tasting Notes: Bright garnet with orange tints. Redcurrant, wild berry, crushed strawberry, and stone on the nose with varietal tones of licorice, camphor, and cola. The palate is juicy and forward, fine-grained and polished, with vibrant acidity, silky tannins, and a fragrant, mineral finish — subtle, elegant, and precise.
- Food Pairings: Braised beef (brasato), roast lamb, tajarin with meat ragù, aged Castelmagno, and porcini mushroom risotto.
- Scores: 94 Wine Advocate (Monica Larner, Aug 2023) | 94 James Suckling (Aug 2023)
