Hugl-Wimmer Grüner Veltliner, Weinviertel, Austria 2024 [1L]
Weingut HuglWimmer is a young family estate in Ketzelsdorf-Poysdorf, in the heart of Austria's Weinviertel. Owners Sylvia (née Wimmer) and Martin Hugl both grew up in wine families and, in 2006, merged their winemaking educations and family agricultural roots into a single first vintage. In 2013, the two family estates formally combined under the HuglWimmer name. The estate's focus is squarely on Grüner Veltliner in its many expressions — from fresh, everyday styles to structured, age-worthy single-vineyard wines — all shaped by the diversity of soils within a two-kilometer radius of Poysdorf.
- WINEMAKER: Martin Hugl
- FARMING: Sustainable
- VARIETY: 100% Grüner Veltliner
- TERROIR: The Weinviertel is Austria's largest wine-producing region, with 13,000 hectares of vineyards. The estate's vines are situated in the wine town of Poysdorf, 50 km north of Vienna, where deep-seated loess and loam soils, gently rolling hillsides, high sunshine hours, and significant diurnal temperature variation provide ideal conditions for Grüner Veltliner. Vineyards are sited on prime south- and south-west-facing hillsides, with soils ranging from light and sandy to medium loam to deep-seated loess and loam. The Weinviertel DAC designation — Austria's first controlled appellation (Districtus Austriae Controllatus), established in 2002 — is reserved exclusively for Grüner Veltliner that demonstrates typicity through blind tasting evaluation.
- VINIFICATION: Grapes are processed gently with a short period of skin contact, then fermented under temperature-controlled conditions at 17°C.
- AGING: Vinified in stainless steel with no oak. Aged on the lees for two months.
- TASTING NOTES: Citrus and grapefruit aromas with hints of exotic tropical fruit and freshly ground white pepper. Medium-bodied and dry with a firm mineral backbone and crisp acidity on the finish.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Seafood, sushi, and summer salads.
