Scions of Sinai is the personal project of Bernhard Bredell, seventh-generation grower in South Africa’s Lower Helderberg region. Working exclusively with dry-farmed bush vines on decomposed granite and sandy soils near the ocean, Bredell champions a low-intervention approach to preserve old-vine expression and the unique maritime terroir of Stellenbosch's coastal edge.
-
WINEMAKER: Bernhard Bredell
-
FARMING: Dry-farmed, sustainable, no chemical inputs
-
VARIETY: 100% Chenin Blanc
-
TERROIR: Sourced from a single vineyard planted in 1978 on decomposed granite soils just 4km from the ocean in the Lower Helderberg. The site sits at 100–200 meters above sea level with constant ocean breezes, helping maintain acidity and moderate ripening.
-
VINIFICATION: Grapes are hand-harvested and whole-bunch pressed; wild yeast fermentation takes place in neutral French oak barrels. No enzymes, fining agents, or additions aside from minimal sulfur.
-
AGING: Aged on the lees for approximately 9 months in old French oak barrels (225L), without bâtonnage.
-
TASTING NOTES: A tightly wound, mineral-driven Chenin with aromas of yellow citrus, green apple, crushed shells, and wild herbs. The palate shows vivid salinity, firm structure, and linear acidity, supported by notes of lemon peel, hay, and almond skin.
-
FOOD PAIRINGS: Grilled calamari, goat cheese salad, poached chicken with preserved lemon, or South African seafood braai.
-
