Established in 1860 in Barbaresco, the De Forville estate has remained family-run for five generations, with current stewardship by Valter and Paolo Anfosso. The family’s long-standing dedication to traditional Piedmontese winemaking and respect for terroir shines through in every bottle. From their Castagnole Lanze vineyards, the ‘Ca’ del Buc’ Barbera captures the vibrant, gamey personality of Asti’s hillsides—fruit-forward, lively, and unmistakably expressive of its place.
WINEMAKER: Valter & Paolo Anfosso
FARMING: Sustainable
VARIETY: 100% Barbera
TERROIR: Sourced from the family’s “Ca’ del Buc” vineyard in Castagnole Lanze, about four kilometers east of Barbaresco. The 20-year-old vines are rooted in calcareous clay soils typical of Asti, producing Barbera that’s more vibrant and spicy than the darker, more structured expressions from Alba. The site benefits from southeast-facing exposures and steady ripening conditions that maintain natural acidity and aromatic intensity.
VINIFICATION: Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel for 10–14 days with temperature control to preserve freshness. After fermentation, the wine is racked into large oak botti and smaller barrels for aging.
AGING: Aged 12 months in a combination of large oak casks and smaller barrels before bottling.
TASTING NOTES: The 2022 ‘Ca’ del Buc’ Barbera d’Asti opens with aromas of ripe cherry, plum, and violets, followed by subtle hints of game and spice. On the palate, it’s lively and medium-bodied, balancing generous red fruit with Barbera’s signature bright acidity and a touch of savory depth. The finish is long and tangy, with a mineral edge that reflects its Asti origins.
FOOD PAIRINGS: Excellent with roasted meats, tomato-based pastas, grilled sausages, or mushroom risotto. Serve slightly below room temperature to highlight its freshness and energy.
