Founded in 2005 by brothers Marc and Alexandre Bachelet, Domaine Bachelet-Monnot has rapidly established itself as one of the Côte de Beaune's most compelling producers. Based in Dezize-lès-Maranges, while the domaine is renowned for its exceptional white wines, critic Jasper Morris MW notes that the brothers have made serious strides with their red wines, producing some of the most compelling Pinot Noirs in the Côte d'Or today.
- WINEMAKER: Marc and Alexandre Bachelet
- FARMING: Sustainable practices following organic principles without formal certification. The estate is described as très lutte raisonnée (very reasoned struggle). No herbicides are used; vineyards are manually ploughed with regular light aeration to encourage deep root growth. Strict debudding maintains low yields. Hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness.
- VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir
- TERROIR: The Les Chanlins vineyard is situated on the Volnay side of Pommard, directly adjacent to the prestigious Premier Cru Rugiens. The Bachelet brothers farm 0.25 hectares of 40+ year-old vines on an exceptionally steep, dangerous parcel at 400 meters elevation that must be worked entirely by hand. The vineyard borders the Premier Cru Les Chanlins-Bas and benefits from similar terroir characteristics. Soils are composed of red clay and chalk (hard limestone), with rocky, shallow topsoil over limestone bedrock—remarkably similar to the soil structure of neighboring Rugiens.
- VINIFICATION: Predominantly destemmed with 15% whole cluster fermentation. Indigenous yeast fermentation with gentle extraction to preserve aromatics and structure.
- AGING: 12 months in 350-liter barrels (15% new oak), followed by 6-8 months in concrete vats on fine lees before bottling.
- TASTING NOTES: Aromas of red cherries, blackberries, crushed iris flowers, and rose petals with subtle notes of forest floor and spice. The palate is medium-bodied with silky texture, vibrant red and dark berry fruit, grippy yet refined tannins, and excellent mineral definition. Flavors of raspberry, wild strawberry, black olive, and sea salt lead to a persistent, precise finish. The wine displays remarkable purity and an elegant structure that belies its village appellation status, showing the quintessential character of Pommard with impressive clarity and persistence.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Duck breast, roasted game birds, coq au vin, grilled lamb chops, beef bourguignon, mushroom dishes, aged hard cheeses.
