This ancient Alsace family firm has become a dependable source for traditional, full-flavored wines with exceptional value. The Boeckel family has cultivated vines in Mittelbergheim for 400 years, with the current estate founded in 1853 by Frédéric Boeckel. Now managed by fifth-generation brothers Jean-Daniel and Thomas Boeckel, the 23-hectare property has been systematically converted to certified organic viticulture over the past decade. Their holdings include a proportion of the prized Zotzenberg Grand Cru vineyards. Recent recognition from Vinous and Wine Advocate has brought wider attention to the quality that longtime importers have appreciated since 1989.
- WINEMAKER: Thomas Boeckel (Cellar Master)
- FARMING: Certified Organic
- VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir
- TERROIR: Oberpfoeller lieu-dit in Mittelbergheim, Alsace. Clay-rich calcareous soils at 250m elevation provide the structure and power characteristic of this site. 45-year-old vines.
- VINIFICATION: Manual harvest. Native yeast fermentation in stainless steel with 8-day maceration and destemming. Malolactic fermentation completed. Pneumatic pressing.
- AGING: 10 months in barriques (80% used, 20% new oak), unfined, filtered. 2,500 bottles produced.
- TASTING NOTES: Pale brick red color. Aromatic profile shows cherry, loganberry, and damson fruit with traditional Pinot Noir hints of leather, game, and dusty forest floor. The palate opens with bright, tangy red fruits supported by clean acidity, silky tannins, and a layer of savory autumnal characters including dried meats, subtle truffle, liquorice, and dried herbs. The clay-rich terroir contributes power and structure while the barrel aging adds spice and shape to the wine's profile.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Roasted game birds, slow-cooked pork shoulder, duck confit, mature washed-rind cheeses, charcuterie including pâtés and terrines, mushroom-based dishes, or traditional Alsatian choucroute garnie.
