Château Lestrille has been an independent family estate since 1901, representing four generations of winemaking tradition in the Entre-Deux-Mers region. Located in Saint-Germain-du-Puch between Libourne and Bordeaux, the estate is led by Estelle Roumage, an agricultural engineer who embodies the property's commitment to environmental stewardship and quality winemaking. Since taking over in 2001, Estelle has championed sustainable viticulture while honoring the family's century-old legacy. The estate's philosophy centers on the belief that great winemaking begins in the vineyard, with each parcel receiving individualized attention and minimal intervention to express its unique characteristics. The 2023 vintage marks a significant milestone as the first certified organic vintage, following a conversion that began in 2020—a natural progression for an estate practicing sustainable viticulture since the 1980s.
- WINEMAKER: Estelle Roumage, with consulting winemaker Thierry Bertelot
- FARMING: Certified Organic (AB) starting with the 2023 vintage, also Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) Level 3, ISO 14001, and Bee Friendly certified
- VARIETY: Predominantly Sauvignon Gris with Sémillon
- TERROIR: The estate encompasses 38 hectares of vineyards in Saint-Germain-du-Puch and Nérigean, situated at the northern point of the Entre-Deux-Mers appellation. The vineyards are planted on predominantly clay-limestone soils that provide natural drainage while retaining sufficient moisture for balanced vine growth. This soil composition contributes to the wine's elegance and mineral character. The area benefits from a temperate oceanic climate moderated by the proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the influence of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, which create ideal conditions for white grape cultivation. The rivers help moderate temperature extremes, allowing for slow, even ripening that preserves natural acidity and develops aromatic complexity.
- VINIFICATION: Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal maturity and carefully selected. Following harvest, the fruit undergoes cold settling and a 24-hour skin maceration period in stainless steel tanks to extract additional aromatics and texture. The wine is then transferred to a combination of new and first-fill French oak barrels where fermentation takes place at approximately 18°C. This barrel fermentation approach—integrated fermentation as opposed to fermenting in tank and then aging in barrel—allows for better integration of oak influence and contributes to the wine's creamy texture and complexity.
- AGING: The wine is aged on its fine lees in French oak barrels for four months, developing richness and complexity while maintaining freshness. The use of both new and first-fill barrels provides subtle oak influence without overwhelming the delicate fruit character. Lees contact adds body and a creamy mouthfeel to the wine.
- TASTING NOTES: The 2023 displays a pale yellow color with golden-green reflections. The nose is fine and complex, offering delicate aromas of white peach and exotic fruits, complemented by hints of honey and vanilla from the oak toasting. There are also subtle notes of ginger and floral undertones. The palate is smooth, ripe, and creamy with concentrated apricot and white peach flavors balanced by vibrant lemon freshness. The oak influence is well-integrated, contributing a spicy, toasty character that adds depth without dominating. The wine finishes with excellent length, showcasing a harmonious balance between fruit richness and refreshing acidity.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: The barrel aging and creamy texture make this an excellent companion for dishes with cream-based sauces, including chicken or fish in cream sauce, lobster thermidor, or creamy risotto. The wine pairs beautifully with a wide variety of cheeses, from soft goat cheese to aged Comté. Its richness and complexity also complement more exotic preparations such as Moroccan tagines, dishes with preserved lemons or olives, grilled white fish with lemon butter, seafood pasta, roasted chicken with herbs, or Asian-inspired cuisine with ginger and citrus element
