Marine Layer’s sparkling program channels the cool coastal energy of the Sonoma Coast, drawing from two of the region’s most expressive sites: their home vineyard in the Sebastopol Hills and the renowned Gap’s Crown Vineyard. Made in the traditional method and aged extensively on the lees, this Brut Rosé captures the precision, minerality, and quiet luxury that define Marine Layer’s wines.
- WINEMAKER: Rob Fischer with production at Carboniste by Dan and Jacqueline Person.
- FARMING: Sustainably farmed vineyard sites on the Sonoma Coast
- VARIETIES: 50% Pinot Noir, 50% Chardonnay
- TERROIR: The Pinot Noir comes exclusively from Marine Layer’s six-acre estate vineyard in the Sebastopol Hills, planted on classic sandy Goldridge soils that amplify aromatic lift and delicacy. The Chardonnay is sourced from Gap’s Crown, one of Sonoma Coast’s most iconic sites, where slow, even ripening preserves acidity while developing concentrated fruit character.
- VINIFICATION: Grapes were harvested early to retain freshness, hand-picked at night, and whole-cluster pressed with extreme gentleness, capturing only the brightest, most refined juice. After a cold 48-hour settle, the wine was racked to neutral French oak for cool fermentation over 8–10 days, contributing subtle texture without overt oak influence. The base wine aged five months before the final blend was assembled in March 2023, followed by tirage bottling in August 2024. Traditional-method secondary fermentation and 18 months sur lie build depth, autolytic nuance, and fine mousse. Finished with a minimal 2 g/L dosage.
- AGING: 18 months sur lie in bottle; Méthode Champenoise; low dosage (2 g/L).
- TASTING NOTES: Pale rose gold in the glass. Aromas of rose petals, wild strawberry, nectarine skin, and pear lift from the glass, layered with subtle notes of toasted San Francisco sourdough. The palate is crisp and vibrant, showing golden raspberry, pastry cream, and a clean mineral core shaped by its high-altitude Chardonnay component. The mousse is fine and energetic, carrying a long, refreshing finish that’s elegant without excess.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Dungeness crab, oysters, sushi, truffle potato chips, creamy cheeses, or prosciutto and melon.
