Maison Gilliard 'Les Murettes' Fendant, Valais, Switzerland 2024
One of the oldest and most storied wine houses in Switzerland, Maison Gilliard was founded in Sion in 1885 by Edmond Gilliard, who established the domaine with the acquisition of Clos du Mont and Clos du Brûle-Fer — terraced vineyards rising steeply above the capital of Valais. Today the house farms 64 hectares between Leuk and Chamoson and produces over 50 wines from 22 grape varieties, all harvested, fermented, aged, and bottled on estate. Fendant Les Murettes has been the defining white since 1921, first produced for a cantonal marksmen's festival and quickly adopted as the benchmark expression of Valais Chasselas.
- Winemaker: Grégory Dubuis (Director)
- Farming: Estate-grown; steep terraced vineyards above Sion
- Variety: Fendant (Chasselas) 100%
- Terroir: AOC Valais; vineyards on steep sun-drenched terraces above the city of Sion. The Valais is Switzerland's sunniest and driest wine canton, sheltered by the Alps, with the Rhône Valley channeling warmth across the hillside sites. Soils are molassic and clay-based, lending structure and mineral tension.
- Vinification: Fermented and aged on fine lees
- Aging: On lees; bottled with characteristic light natural pétillance
- Tasting Notes: Aromas of white flowers, lime blossom, and fresh orchard fruit. The palate opens with a lively, fruity attack underpinned by mineral tension and a bright, persistent finish.
- Food Pairings: Aperitif, starters, freshwater fish, fondue and raclette, soft cheeses
