Pierre Meurgey is a respected négociant-éleveur based in Beaune, known for his meticulous approach to sourcing and vinification. With deep roots in Burgundy and a commitment to showcasing the nuances of premier cru terroirs, Meurgey crafts elegant, terroir-transparent wines. ‘Les Grands Epenots’ is one of Pommard’s most esteemed Premier Cru vineyards, located near the Volnay border and known for producing structured yet refined Pinot Noir.
WINEMAKER: Pierre Meurgey
FARMING: Sustainable (practicing organic)
VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir
TERROIR: ‘Les Grands Epenots’ is located at the northern end of Pommard on deep clay-limestone soils with good drainage. This site benefits from excellent sun exposure and a slightly cooler microclimate due to its proximity to Volnay, lending a touch of finesse to Pommard’s typical power.
VINIFICATION: Grapes are hand-harvested, fully destemmed, and fermented with native yeasts in open vats with gentle punch-downs.
AGING: Aged for 14–16 months in French oak barrels (30% new) before bottling.
TASTING NOTES: Aromas of black cherry, violet, forest floor, and baking spice. The palate is structured and concentrated, with firm tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, mineral-laced finish.
FOOD PAIRINGS: Duck breast, coq au vin, wild mushroom dishes, or roasted root vegetables.
