Brookdale Estate, located in the foothills of the Klein Drakenstein mountains in Paarl, is known for its innovative, sustainably farmed wines crafted by winemaker Kiara Scott. The Mason Road range highlights varietal purity, balance, and accessibility, with this Syrah offering a fresh take on South African terroir.
WINEMAKER: Kiara Scott
FARMING: Sustainable (vegan and vegetarian certified)
VARIETY: 100% Syrah
TERROIR: The 2023 vintage saw a dry, warm winter, optimal vegetative growth, beneficial rain before véraison, and a cool, wet ripening period. This extended the ripening window, delivering Syrah grapes with excellent flavor and color intensity.
VINIFICATION: Hand-harvested in parcels, with a portion of whole bunches included. Natural fermentation in open-top fermenters, with a mix of punch downs and pump overs to gently extract color and flavor. After fermentation, wine was pressed off skins; malolactic completed in barrel and foudres. Short maceration for stability and palate length.
AGING: 8 months in a mix of 500L and 300L French oak barrels and 2,500L foudré barrels (40% third fill).
TASTING NOTES: Aromas of rich red fruit, mulberries, and night flowers, lifted by spicy, resinous notes and olive tapenade. The palate is succulent, with redcurrant, cherry cola, and blood orange acidity, framed by gentle, barely-there tannins, black pepper, and a neatly dry, balanced finish.
ALCOHOL: 13.65%
TOTAL ACIDITY: 5.5 g/L
RESIDUAL SUGAR: 2.1 g/L
pH: 3.84
FOOD PAIRINGS: Braised lamb, grilled eggplant, charcuterie, mushroom risotto, or barbecue.
OTHER: Vegan and vegetarian certified; screw cap closure.
