Lievland 'Bushvine' Pinotage, Paarl, Coastal Region, South Africa 2023
Lievland's history dates back to 1715, when the original farm was granted to the ex-soldier Jurie Hanekom. The estate lies on the western slopes of the Simonsberg mountains between Stellenbosch and Paarl, along the so-called Simonsberg "Golden Mile" of wine estates. The manor house dates to 1865, and many a pioneering spirit have called it home through the years — including the legendary baroness from Latvia who plowed the vineyards with a horse, and the visionary winemaker who barrel-fermented a Chenin Blanc long before it became standard practice. José Conde and Tyrrel Myburgh, partners in MAN Family Wines, purchased the farm in late 2017 with the goal of resurrecting it to its former glory.
- WINEMAKER: Riaan Möller
- FARMING: Dry farmed. Certified Sustainable — Integrated Production of Wine (IPW). Vegan.
- VARIETY: 93% Pinotage, 7% Grenache.
- TERROIR: Sourced from two 20+ year-old dry-farmed bush-vine parcels in the Agter-Paarl region. One vineyard is planted on granite, producing wines of structure and aromatic intensity; the other on shale, whose fractured nature supports good water retention and yields concentrated fruit with soft, elegant tannins.
- VINIFICATION: Hand harvested. Two days of cold maceration prior to fermentation. Pump-overs conducted three times daily. Due to Pinotage's naturally high phenolic concentration, the wine was pressed off skins immediately upon fermentation completion and moved directly to barrel.
- AGING: 16 months in French oak, 10% new.
- TASTING NOTES: Ruby-garnet with a purple hue. Aromas of cherry, raspberry, vanilla, and cedar. The palate delivers red berries and ripe plum with a savory undercurrent, balanced acidity, and fine-grained tannins.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Grilled lamb, braised beef, roast pork, hard cheeses, mushroom-based dishes.
