Reichsrat von Buhl Rosé Sekt Brut, Pfalz, Germany 2019
It’s October, spooky season, the time when the veil is thin but the bubbles are luminous. German wine might bring to mind Riesling, maybe something sweet, but this bottle reveals a darker, more seductive side. Pinot Noir, or Spätburgunder if you’re feeling fancy (and German), reborn as a dry, sparkling rosé made for the witching hour.
Founded in 1849, Reichsrat von Buhl has been conjuring gorgeous wines from the vines of the Pfalz for over 170 years. The estate is known for its noble Rieslings and meticulous craftsmanship, but winemaker Simone Frigerio brings a breath of renewal, crafting wines that speak clearly of soil and season. “My role,” he says, “is to interpret the soils through our wines, to support their natural development and expression.”
The history of Von Buhl is rich with legends. Their wines were served at the 1869 opening of the Suez Canal, and none other than Chancellor Otto von Bismarck was a great admirer. It was his famous declaration, “Dieses Ungeheuer schmeckt mir ungeheuer”—“This Ungeheuer tastes monstrously good”—that propelled the Forster Ungeheuer site to global fame. Reichsrat von Buhl has always held ownership of the prime parcel within this 29-hectare grand cru vineyard, a place whose name, meaning "monster," is particularly fitting for the season.
The 2019 Rosé Sekt Brut is moonlight in a glass: soft, luminous, and quietly dramatic. Notes of wild strawberry, pomegranate, and a hint of brioche meet a gentle mineral tension that keeps it fresh and alive. It’s both structured and supple, just mysterious enough to keep you reaching for another sip.
Pair it with anything that flirts in the dark: risotto, beet tartare, or our Tin of the Month, Tuna Belly in Yuzu-Kosho and Organic Olive Oil from Siesta Co. Together, they’re a ritual of salt, citrus, and sparkle, proof that even in spooky season, pleasure can still be precise. —Kaylee Daly, DECANT Napa
