Tablas Creek Vineyard 'The Overachiever' Grenache, Paso Robles, CA 2022
Founded in 1989, Tablas Creek is the culmination of a friendship between the Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel and the Haas family of Vineyard Brands, a relationship dating back to 1967. Tablas Creek Vineyard After a four-year search, the partners chose Paso Robles for its Mediterranean climate and soils, and imported vine cuttings directly from Beaucastel to ensure clonal fidelity. Vinum 55 Tablas Creek is the first Regenerative Organic Certified® vineyard in the world, farming organically since inception, with Biodynamic certification following in 2017. Tablas Creek Vineyard The Overachiever is part of the Patelin tier — single-varietal wines sourced from grower vineyards across Paso Robles planted predominantly to Tablas Creek clones, made at the estate using the same native yeast, foudre-aging philosophy as the estate wines.
-
WINEMAKER: Neil Collins
-
FARMING: Sourced from multiple Paso Robles vineyards, most planted with cuttings from the Tablas Creek nursery. Organically farmed.
-
VARIETY: 100% Grenache.
-
TERROIR: Grapes sourced from multiple districts within the Paso Robles AVA, including limestone-rich areas such as the Adelaida District, the coastal-influenced Templeton Gap, and the El Pomar District, as well as warmer inland sites. Tablas Creek Vineyard The 2022 vintage was the third consecutive drought year for the region; early rains sustained vine health though cluster counts were down approximately 15%. A cool first half of summer gave way to the hottest-ever August and September, producing concentrated flavors and an early finish to harvest.
-
VINIFICATION: Fermented separately by lot using only native yeasts. Lots selected to emphasize Grenache's characteristic freshness, avoiding riper parcels that trend toward higher alcohol.
-
AGING: Aged in neutral 1,200-gallon oak foudres prior to bottling.
-
TASTING NOTES: Bright ruby in color, with herby red cherry on the nose. Black cherry, cranberry, and a trace of vanilla on the medium-light palate, with firm tannins and medium-plus acidity.
-
FOOD PAIRINGS: Roast poultry, grilled pork, pasta with meat sauces, charcuterie, aged cheeses.
