Pissarres is derived from the word “pizarra” which is “slate” in Spanish.
- Winemaker: Jose Mas Barberà
- Farming: Organic. Animal traction is used to work the soil on the steep terraces and chemicals are never used, only natural organic and biodynamic treatments are utilized, the winery is practicing organic.
- Varieties: 60% Garnacha (Grenache) and 40% Samsó (Carignan)
- Soil / Terroir: Vineyards in Mas Alsera in Torroja del Priorat (500m) and Sant Martí in Bellmunt (350m), planted in 1950 and 1979 on red llicorella (decomposed slate), using the traditional bush vine pruning technique
-
Vinification: The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks of 5,000 liters. The
different varieties in the coupage are vinified separately to get the maximum expressive potential of each grape. Aging takes place over 12 months in 225 and 500 French oak barrels, or in 2,000 and 3,000-liter Fuders. A portion of the vine ages in cement tubs. - Tasting Notes: Intense red with purple tones, with fresh aromas of flowers and fruits. Cheerful and lively, expressing citrus and stonefruit flavors. Drinking well now, but it will benefit from a bit of decanting or aging, and will pair beautifully with red meats and hearty stewed dishes.
