Caroline Morey 'Les Grèves' 1er Cru Rouge, Beaune, Burgundy, France 2023
The Morey family has been rooted in Chassagne-Montrachet since the mid-16th century. It was Albert Morey who first began domaine bottling in 1950, and his vineyards passed to his son Jean-Marc — a respected figure in Chassagne — and then to Caroline, Jean-Marc's eldest daughter, when he retired in 2014. Caroline launched her own domaine that year with an initial holding of 2.4 hectares in Chassagne-Montrachet, Santenay, and Hautes Côtes de Beaune, which has since grown to approximately seven hectares. She shares a winery in Chassagne with her husband Pierre-Yves Colin, and their shared philosophy — precision, purity, minimal intervention, indigenous yeasts — is evident across both labels. For reds, Caroline employs partial whole-cluster fermentation in most vintages to add lift and aromatic complexity, aging in 228-liter barrels for structure and focus. Les Grèves is among the most esteemed of Beaune's 44 Premier Cru climats — the vineyard planted predominantly to Pinot Noir — and Caroline's rows, at mid-slope and planted in the mid-1960s, are among the oldest in her portfolio.
- Winemaker: Caroline Morey
- Farming: Estate vineyards. Sustainable practices. Hand harvested.
- Variety: Pinot Noir 100%
- Terroir: Les Grèves 1er Cru, Beaune AOC, Côte de Beaune, Burgundy. Les Grèves is one of the largest and most celebrated Premier Cru sites in Beaune, with a mid-slope position providing well-draining clay-limestone soils and excellent southeast exposure. Caroline's parcel is planted to older vines from the mid-1960s, situated in long rows shared with cousin Thomas Morey. The site produces structured, elegant Beaune rouge with good aromatic lift and fine tannic backbone.
- Vinification: Partial whole-cluster fermentation, contributing aromatic lift and finesse. Indigenous yeasts. Gentle extraction throughout.
- Aging: Aged in French oak 228-liter barrels, consistent with the house approach for reds. Drink from 2028–2034.
- Tasting Notes: Pale to medium crimson. Lifted and perfumed — red cherry, raspberry, dried flowers, and a light herbal thread from the whole clusters. The palate is focused and elegant, with fine-grained tannins, lively acidity, and a long, mineral finish. Precise and restrained in Caroline's characteristic style.
- Food Pairings: Roast duck breast, rabbit with mustard, mushroom tart, charcuterie, and soft-ripened Burgundian cheeses.
