Founded with a philosophy of challenging convention, Newfound focuses on crafting wines of place with minimal intervention. Grenache is the cornerstone of their red program, while Semillon holds equal importance for their whites. The 2022 'Gravels' Blanc marks the first white bottling in the Gravels line, showcasing the varietal’s textural complexity and fresh vibrancy from a single site in Lake County.
-
WINEMAKER: Matt and Audra Naumann
-
FARMING: Sustainable, natural practices
-
VARIETY: 100% Semillon
-
TERROIR: From a 15-year-old vineyard on the southern edge of Clear Lake in Lake County AVA. The site’s mineral-rich soils contribute to a crystalline, structured profile.
-
VINIFICATION: Harvested in two passes (September 7 and September 13, 2022). Two fermentation methods were used: 80% whole-cluster pressed and fermented/aged sur lie in equal parts concrete and Austrian oak; 20% fermented on skins in open-top wooden fermenters for 14 days to add phenolic structure. All fermentations with native yeasts.
-
AGING: 10 months in concrete and Austrian oak; bottled unfined and unfiltered. First racking and final blend occurred just five days before bottling.
-
TASTING NOTES: Aromas of jasmine, white peach, and hawthorn. The palate balances fresh tartness with a subtle oily texture, delivering both lift and depth. Light in body but deceptively powerful, with mineral tension and a long finish.
-
FOOD PAIRINGS: Fresh oysters, grilled trout, roast chicken with herbs, or soft-ripened cheeses
-
ALCOHOL: 12.1%
-
PRODUCTION: 1,136 cases (9L)
