Pierre Moncuit 'Huges de Coulmet' Blanc de Blancs Brut, Champagne, France NV
Pierre Moncuit is a grower Champagne house rooted in the Grand Cru village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, where the Moncuit family has worked Chardonnay vines since 1889. ‘Hugues de Coulmet’ is named after Nicole Moncuit’s grandfather and sourced from family-owned vineyards in Sézanne. It delivers a more supple and approachable Blanc de Blancs expression while still rooted in chalky terroir and meticulous élevage.
- WINEMAKER: Nicole Moncuit
- FARMING: Sustainable; lutte raisonnée, with all vineyard work done by hand
- VARIETY: 100% Chardonnay
- TERROIR: Sourced from chalk and limestone soils in the Coteaux du Sézannais, a sub-region south of the Côte des Blancs. These soils share the same Kimmeridgian origins but deliver slightly rounder, fruitier expressions than Le Mesnil.
- VINIFICATION: Fermented in stainless steel tanks with native yeasts; no malolactic fermentation to retain tension and precision
- AGING: Aged on the lees in bottle for 2–3 years before disgorgement; dosage is low (approx. 6–7 g/L)
- TASTING NOTES: Aromas of green apple, lemon zest, and white flowers lead into a palate that balances citrus tension with soft brioche and chalky minerality. A refined mousse, bright acidity, and a long, saline finish make this a quintessential aperitif-style Champagne.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Fresh oysters, gougères, goat cheese tart, or tempura vegetables
-
SCORES:
- Wine Advocate: 91 – “Vibrant and focused, with a creamy mid-palate and chalky structure.”
- Vinous: 90 – “Bright and incisive, the Hugues de Coulmet offers terrific value and purity.”
- Wine Spectator: 91 – “A sleek Blanc de Blancs with lemon curd, white peach, and crushed chalk notes.”
