Domaine Skouras 'St. George' Agiorgitiko, Nemea, Peloponnese, Greece 2021
George Skouras is one of the foundational figures of the modern Greek wine renaissance. A native of Argos, he studied oenology in Dijon and launched Domaine Skouras in the mid-1980s with little more than a garage and a vision. Decades later, he is regarded as one of Greece’s most respected winemakers, known for elevating indigenous varieties like Agiorgitiko and Moschofilero while also pioneering high-altitude vineyards throughout the Peloponnese. 'St. George' is his classic Agiorgitiko from Nemea—named for the local moniker of the grape—and showcases the balance, depth, and elegance that define his style.
-
WINEMAKER: George Skouras
-
VARIETY: 100% Agiorgitiko
-
TERROIR: Sourced from several high-elevation parcels (up to 2,000 ft) in the Nemea appellation of the northeastern Peloponnese. Clay soils and slow ripening conditions help develop complexity and natural acidity.
-
VINIFICATION: Grapes are crushed and fermented in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. Maceration lasts ~12 days. Full malolactic fermentation is completed in French barriques.
-
AGING: 12 months in second-use 225L French oak barrels, followed by 2 months in bottle before release.
-
TASTING NOTES: Deep morello cherry hue with aromas of blackberries, raspberry, and ripe strawberry, alongside hints of clove, cinnamon, and subtle tobacco. Medium-bodied, with silky tannins and balanced acidity. A finish of sweet vanilla and black pepper rounds out the red-fruited core.
-
FOOD PAIRINGS: Lamb, grilled eggplant, charred mushrooms, pork skewers, or tinned mackerel in olive oil
