Domaine Combier 'Laurent Combier' Crozes-Hermitage, Rhône Valley, France 2023
Domaine Combier is a pioneering estate in Crozes-Hermitage, long committed to organic farming and pure, expressive Syrah. The ‘Laurent Combier’ bottling—named for the estate’s second-generation winemaker—is crafted from some of the domaine’s oldest vines and reflects a signature style: vibrant fruit, silky tannins, and unmistakable northern Rhône character.
-
WINEMAKER: David Combier
-
FARMING: Certified Organic since 1970
-
VARIETY: 100% Syrah
-
TERROIR: From estate vineyards on the Les Chassis plateau in the southern part of Crozes-Hermitage. Soils are glacial alluvium with large round galets over clay-limestone subsoils. The area benefits from warm days and cooling winds, preserving freshness in the fruit.
-
VINIFICATION: Grapes are hand-harvested and partially destemmed (~80%). Fermented in concrete vats with native yeasts, using gentle pumpovers and cap management. No sulfur added during vinification.
-
AGING: Aged 12 months in a mix of 1- to 3-year-old barrels (no new oak) and concrete to balance structure and fruit purity. Bottled unfiltered.
-
TASTING NOTES: Aromas of black plum, violet, smoked meat, and cracked pepper lead into a palate of juicy blackberry, black olive, and garrigue. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and a vibrant, savory finish.
-
FOOD PAIRINGS: Lamb shawarma, grilled eggplant with tahini, roast duck, or lentil and sausage stew
-
SCORES:
-
Wine Advocate (2022): 92 – “Combier’s wines continue to impress with purity and balance. A classic expression of Crozes.” (2023 not yet reviewed)
