The Pasquero-Elia family of Paitin is best known for their historic Barbaresco cru “Serraboella,” but they also produce vibrant, mineral-driven Arneis from the sandy hills of Roero. With a focus on purity and precision, this bottling offers a crisp, expressive take on one of Piedmont’s most ancient white varieties. This wine is named for Elisa Elia, the matriarch of the family, produced for the first time in 1973 after she died.
-
WINEMAKER: Giovanni Secondo Pasquero-Elia
-
FARMING: Certified Organic
-
VARIETY: 100% Arneis
-
TERROIR: Sourced from estate vineyards in the Roero DOC, characterized by sandy soils with marine sediment, which enhance Arneis’s aromatic lift and freshness. Planted with Southwest exposure, 200-240 meters above sea level, planted in 1980.
-
VINIFICATION: Grapes are hand-harvested, gently pressed, and fermented with native yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. No malolactic fermentation to preserve freshness.
-
AGING: Aged on fine lees in stainless steel for 6 months before bottling.
-
TASTING NOTES: Aromas of white flowers, chamomile, green pear, and almond lead into a crisp palate of citrus zest, stone fruit, and subtle saline minerality. Light-bodied with bright acidity and a clean, dry finish.
-
FOOD PAIRINGS: Great with crudo, fresh cheeses, grilled vegetables, po'boy sandwiches, linguini and clams, or white risotto with herbs
-
SCORES:
-
Wine Advocate (2022): 90 – “Clean and vibrant with plenty of Arneis typicity.” (2023 review pending)
