- Ward Four Wines is the creative project of Justin Michelle Ward Trabue, a winemaker known for crafting small-lot California wines that marry artistry, community, and approachability. This Barbera comes from two sustainably farmed sites—Algerfield Vineyard in Sonoma County and Zacharias Block in Mendocino County—and captures the playful, expressive heart of Ward Four’s style.
- WINEMAKER: Justin Michelle Ward Trabue
- FARMING: Sustainably farmed fruit from North Coast vineyards; hand-harvested and minimally handled in the cellar to preserve varietal brightness and texture.
- VARIETY: 100 % Barbera
- TERROIR: Sourced from Algerfield Vineyard (Sonoma County), known for warm days and alluvial soils yielding richness, and Zacharias Block (Mendocino County), where cooler nights and rocky soils retain lift and acidity. The combination balances Barbera’s natural energy with supple fruit depth.
- VINIFICATION: Grapes were destemmed and fermented in small lots at moderate temperatures to highlight aromatics. Each vineyard lot was vinified separately, then blended before aging.
- AGING: Aged nine months in a mix of new and neutral oak barrels to enhance roundness while keeping the wine bright and fruit-forward.
- TASTING NOTES: Vibrant fuchsia in color and medium-bodied, the 2024 Barbera shows aromas of purple sage, rose petal, and sun-dried tomato. Flavors of red cherry, elderberry, savory herbs, and a hint of kalamata olive glide across a creamy palate with fresh acidity and a long, juicy finish.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Chill it lightly (20 minutes in the fridge) and serve with pizza, Bolognese, or grilled vegetables. Best enjoyed with friends and a great soundtrack.
