Somewhat under the radar, Graham Tatomers wines are some of Californias best for Riesling and Gruner Veltliner. Somms like Cara and Simi have often been duped into calling these wines Austrian in blind tastings because Grahams handle on nuance and terroir is deep.
- Winemaker: Graham Tatomer
- Farming: Sustainable with Organic Practices
- Varieties: 80% Grüner Veltliner, 20% Dry Riesling
- Terroir: Sourced from John Sebastiano and Kick-On Ranch Vineyards (Grüner Veltliner) and La Estancia Vineyard in Santa Lucia Highlands (Riesling), areas known for their cool-climate conditions.
- Vinification: Whole-cluster pressed, with fermentation and aging in a combination of stainless steel and neutral puncheons to preserve freshness and enhance texture.
- Aging: Aged in mostly stainless steel, with a portion in neutral puncheons, to add complexity without overt oak influence.
- Tasting Notes: Aromas of pear, jasmine, mint, and lemon confit with a crisp and mineral palate. This wine pairs beautifully with pork, shellfish, or pasta dishes.
- Alcohol: 13%
- Production: 1,500 cases
"Hinter der Mauer is a term that has a special meaning in the village of Loiben where I worked with Weingut Knoll. It refers to the space on a terraced vineyard between a row of vines and the wall to the next level. This row is often extra narrow and exceedingly difficult to work. There is a sense of being squished. But it often produces some of the best tasting fruit do the radiant heat from the stone wall next to it. I learned of this term one jovial evening with the Knoll family. We were all sitting around the table enjoying wines and they were teaching me some Austrian dialect terms that they were both proud of and entertained by. Hinter der Mauer is not only Austrian but distinctly a “Loiben Village” term. It would not even have the same meaning in other areas of the Wachau." -Graham Tatomer
