Le Pianelle is a boutique winery located in the Bramaterra DOC region of Piedmont, dedicated to producing high-quality wines from indigenous grape varieties. The estate is known for its focus on sustainable farming and minimal intervention in the cellar, allowing the wines to express the unique character of the rugged, mountainous terroir.
- WINEMAKER: Cristiano Garella, in partnership with Dieter Heuskel and Peter Dipoli, the owners of the estate, and renowned viticulturist Andrea Zanetta
- FARMING: Sustainable farming practices with an emphasis on biodiversity and soil health. The vineyards are cultivated without the use of synthetic chemicals, and organic practices are increasingly implemented.
- VARIETY: Approx. 90% Nebbiolo, 10% Vespolina
- TERROIR: The Bramaterra DOC is located in the northern part of the Alto Piemonte region, where vineyards are planted on steep, terraced slopes with volcanic soils rich in minerals. The altitude (350-500 meters above sea level) and climate of the region, with its warm days and cooler nights, contribute to slow grape ripening, resulting in balanced acidity and depth of flavor.
- VINIFICATION/AGING: The grapes were destemmed, pressed, and fermented in conical wooden fermenters, with a total maceration of about 26 days for the Vespolina, and 34 days for the Nebbiolo. The Nebbiolo is then aged for 20 months in large barrels before bottling, while the Vespolina is aged for the same period of time in used barriques. Normally only two rackings are necessary, to preserve the aromatic integrity of the wine.
- TASTING NOTES: The 2020 Le Pianelle Bramaterra is a deeply expressive wine with aromas of dark cherries, plums, and hints of dried flowers, herbs, and earthy spices. On the palate, it offers a harmonious combination of rich, velvety tannins and vibrant acidity. Flavors of ripe red fruits are complemented by a touch of leather, tobacco, and mineral-driven notes of crushed stone, leading to a long and satisfying finish.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Pairs wonderfully with roasted meats, such as lamb or beef, as well as hearty pasta dishes like pappardelle with wild boar ragù, or aged cheeses like Castelmagno.
