Artomaña Txakolina, located in the Basque Country's Arabako Txakolina DO, produces Eugenio Alava Ugarte was the first-generation visionary behind the revival of txakoli in the 1980s and 90s. In 1988, he replanted the txakoli vineyards he remembered from his youth, starting with 6 hectares of Hondarrabi Zuri. In 2005, his sons, the Alava brothers, expanded the family project, founding Artomaña Txakolina and growing the estate to 20 hectares. Today, they continue Eugenio’s vision, passing the txakoli tradition to the next generation. Per the style in Álava, Xarmant is bottled with less naturally occurring residual carbon dioxide than txakoli from other regions, like Getaria.
-
WINEMAKER: The Alava Brothers
- FARMING: Practicing organic
- VARIETY: 80% Hondarrabi Zuri, 20% Petit Courbu
- TERROIR: Deep alluvial soils with loam and calcareous elements; vineyards benefit from cooling winds off the Atlantic Ocean.
- VINIFICATION: Grape varieties are harvested separately based on ripeness; must is extracted using a pneumatic press; after a brief cold maceration, each variety ferments separately in stainless steel tanks with native yeasts; aged on lees for two months without bâtonnage; blended and stored at low temperatures in stainless steel until bottling.
- TASTING NOTES: Fresh and lively dry white with a touch of spritz; racing acidity, citrus zest, and a hint of herbaceousness.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Ideal with clams in broth with crusty bread, steamed or marinated asparagus, high-quality anchovies, sautéed baby squid, and white beans in vinaigrette.
