‘Clos de la Baronne’ is a monopole parcel owned entirely by Domaine des Comtes Lafon, located just outside the village of Meursault. Introduced as a single-vineyard cuvée in 2012, it offers a slightly more forward and approachable expression of Meursault, while still carrying the hallmark balance, purity, and depth that defines the Lafon style. Now under the guidance of Pierre and Léa Lafon, the domaine continues its legacy of biodynamic farming and restrained, precise winemaking. 2012 marked the debut of Clos de la Baronne as a standalone parcel cuvée.
- WINEMAKER: Léa & Pierre Lafon
- FARMING: Certified Biodynamic since 1998
- VARIETY: 100% Chardonnay
- TERROIR: A 2.7-hectare east-facing monopole just outside Meursault village, planted to ~40-year-old vines on clay-limestone soils. The site's relatively gentle slope and deep soils lend richness and early accessibility.
- VINIFICATION: Indigenous yeast fermentation in barrel with minimal intervention. Full malolactic fermentation. Aged on fine lees with bâtonnage only when necessary.
- AGING: Typically aged 12+ months in French oak barrels, a modest portion of which is new; then rested in tank before bottling.
- TASTING NOTES: Bright lemon and orchard fruit on the nose, with hints of white flowers, wet stone, and hazelnut. The palate is open-knit and supple, offering ripe citrus, a creamy mid-palate, and a fresh mineral finish. Compared to Lafon’s Premier Cru sites, ‘Baronne’ is more giving in youth but still built to age gracefully.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Perfect with butter-poached lobster, roast chicken with morels, Comté, or seared scallops with citrus beurre blanc.
