Alexandra Sainz Brut Rosé, Bouzy Grand Cru, Champagne, France NV
$80.00
Regular price $75.00Champagne Alexandra Sainz was launched in 2021 by Alexandra Sainz, the ninth generation of a grape-growing family with roots in Bouzy dating to 1741. Trained at the École Viticole de Champagne in Avize, where she earned her degree in viticulture and oenology, Alexandra returned to the family's Grand Cru holdings to transition from grape supplier to estate producer under her own label. Her brother, Jean-François Clouet, leads the neighboring André Clouet house — also in Bouzy — making this one of the more quietly accomplished winemaking families in the Montagne de Reims. Alexandra farms roughly seven acres of south- and southeast-facing parcels, predominantly Pinot Noir with select plots of Chardonnay. The estate's focus is terroir transparency: small-batch winemaking, extended lees aging, and restrained dosage across all cuvées.
- WINEMAKER: Alexandra Sainz
- FARMING: Sustainably farmed; individual plots tended with site-specific attention to rootstock and clone selection matched to soil and exposure. No certified organic or biodynamic designation confirmed.
- VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir, Bouzy Grand Cru. Rosé de saignée method: a small barrel of red wine (Bouzy Rouge) produced from selected 2019 Pinot Noir was used for color and structure.
- TERROIR: Bouzy is a 100% Grand Cru village on the southeastern slope of the Montagne de Reims, one of Champagne's premier sites for Pinot Noir. Soils are deep chalk, delivering structure, mineral tension, and the characteristic earthiness associated with the village. Vineyards are south- and southeast-facing with slopes up to 15%, providing excellent drainage and sun exposure. This cuvée is sourced exclusively from Bouzy Grand Cru parcels. Base vintage: 2019.
- VINIFICATION: Whole-cluster pressing; only first-press juice (cuvée) used. Primary fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 18°C. Malolactic fermentation completed. Red wine component produced from a single oak barrel of Bouzy Rouge, integrated into the assemblage to achieve color and Pinot character. Disgorgement: January 2025. Dosage: 6 g/L (Brut).
- AGING: Minimum 5 years on the lees prior to disgorgement.
- TASTING NOTES: Delicate pink with fine, persistent mousse. The nose offers fresh red berries, wild strawberry, and wildflowers, with secondary notes of wet stone and cherrywood. The palate is structured and taut, with crystalline acidity framing the fruit and a pronounced chalk-driven minerality on the finish. Extended lees aging adds a creamy undercurrent to what is otherwise a precise, terroir-focused expression.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Charcuterie and cured meats, salmon crudo, roasted duck breast, soft-ripened cheeses.
