Alfaro Family Vineyards 'Trout Gulch Vineyard' Pinot Noir, Santa Cruz Mountains, California 2024
Alfaro Family Vineyards was founded in 1998 when Richard Alfaro, a successful artisan bread baker, sold his bakery business and transformed a 75-acre former apple orchard in Corralitos into what is now one of the Santa Cruz Mountains' most distinctive estate wineries. The first vines went in the ground that same year; subsequent plantings in 1999 and 2001 expanded the estate, which now totals approximately 60 acres under vine in Corralitos — Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot, Malbec, and Grüner Veltliner — with 18 additional estate acres in Aptos. The Trout Gulch Vineyard, a separate 16-acre site near Aptos, was farmed by the family for more than 15 years as a lease before being purchased outright in 2021. Today the winery is led by second-generation winemaker Ryan Alfaro, who studied in Dijon and returned to California with a deep commitment to whole-cluster fermentation and minimal intervention winemaking. Wife Mary Kay Alfaro, a certified sommelier, oversees the tasting room and wine club.

- Terroir: Trout Gulch Vineyard, Santa Cruz Mountains AVA, California. Situated near the coastal town of Aptos at 750–800 feet elevation on well-draining sandy loam soils, Trout Gulch benefits from strong Pacific influence — marine layer, cool temperatures, and direct ocean proximity — giving the site its characteristic brightness, tension, and focused minerality. The 44-year-old vines and decades of dry farming produce concentrated small-berry fruit with naturally high skin-to-juice ratios.
- Vinification: Native yeast fermentation. Whole-cluster inclusion consistent with Ryan Alfaro's approach across the range. Fermented in small lots.
- Aging: Aged in mostly neutral French oak. Bottled without fining or filtration.
- Tasting Notes: Vivid ruby. Hibiscus, crushed raspberry, wild strawberry, and white pepper on the nose, with an earthy undercurrent of damp soil and chaparral. The palate is bright and focused — cherry, red berry, and concrete-dust minerality — with lively acidity, silky texture, and a clean, spiced finish. Expressive and ageworthy.
