Avancia 'Cuvée de O' Godello, Valdeorras, Spain 2024
Bodegas Avancia was founded in 2004 by Jorge Ordóñez, the importer credited with introducing Godello to the United States market. The estate comprises roughly 23 acres of dry-farmed, organically cultivated vineyards on the mountainsides above the Sil River in Valdeorras — a D.O. in the province of Ourense, Galicia, whose name derives from the Roman gold-mining operations once carried out in the valley. Ordóñez has long maintained that Godello is Spain's finest indigenous white grape, and Avancia's 'Old Vine' bottling, sourced from vines planted in 1990–1991 in the village of Petín, is the estate's benchmark expression of that conviction.
- WINEMAKER: Jorge Ordóñez
- FARMING: Organic. Traditional dry-farmed viticulture. Head-trained (gobelet) vines, cultivated entirely by hand.
- VARIETY: 100% Godello
- TERROIR: D.O. Valdeorras, village of Petín, on the southern bank of the Sil River with a northeast/north orientation. Soils are primarily slate intermixed with small quantities of quartz and sandy granitic material from decomposed bedrock. Mediterranean climate with Atlantic influence; cold winters and warm, dry summers.
- VINIFICATION: Hand-harvested into small baskets. Whole bunches chilled for 24 hours prior to pressing to minimize oxidation and reduce required SO₂. Fermented with indigenous yeast in French oak puncheons and demi-muids (500–600L).
- AGING: 5–6 months sur lie in French oak puncheons and demi-muids with bâtonnage.
- TASTING NOTES: Acacia, linden blossom, and pear on the nose, with pure, direct expression. The palate is intense and structured, with good weight and refreshing acidity; a lightly malic edge lends energy and length to the finish. Drinking well now and will reward short-term cellaring.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Roasted white fish, shellfish, spider crab, seafood rice dishes.
- SCORES: Vinous 94
