Bernard Burgaud is one of Côte-Rôtie’s quiet traditionalists—an independent grower who produces just one cuvée each year, blending fruit from several of the appellation’s most respected lieux-dits. His philosophy is simple: one estate, one wine, made with integrity and without compromise. The 2020 vintage reflects that classic Burgaud style, delivering purity of Syrah, depth of fruit, and the polished structure that has made this domaine a longtime insider favorite.
- WINEMAKER: Bernard Burgaud
- FARMING: Sustainable
- VARIETY: 100% Syrah
- TERROIR: Sourced from multiple sites across Côte-Rôtie including Côte Blonde, Les Moutonnes, Fongeant, and other steep, schist- and granite-based slopes. These varied parcels contribute layers of fruit, minerality, and structure—hallmarks of Côte-Rôtie’s diverse hillside terroirs.
- VINIFICATION: Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented traditionally in stainless steel with a focus on preserving purity of fruit. Maceration is long and slow to extract fine tannins and aromatic complexity.
- AGING: Aged in oak barrels (mostly used) to integrate texture and add subtle spice without overwhelming the wine’s natural elegance. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
- TASTING NOTES: Lifted and vibrant, with aromas of blueberry, blackberry, and black olive. The palate shows medium to full body with a touch of creaminess through the mid-palate, balanced by fine, silky tannins. The finish is long, smooth, and quietly powerful. Still youthful and a bit tightly wound, the 2020 shows excellent potential as it continues to unwind over the coming decade.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Ideal with lamb, roasted duck, beef short ribs, grilled mushrooms, or French-inspired stews.
- SCORES: 91–93 points — Wine Advocate (Joe Czerwinski) / Drink 2023–2035
