Churchill's Estates 'Contexto', Sousa, Vinho Verde, Portugal 2024
Founded in 1981 by Johnny Graham — a fifth-generation member of the family behind Graham's Port, sold to the Symingtons in 1970 — Churchill's was built to bring a drier, more personal style to Port while carrying forward his family's winemaking tradition. Named for Johnny's wife, Caroline Churchill, the boutique, family-run house has since expanded from Port into Douro and Vinho Verde still wines, remaining one of the last fully independent British-owned port houses.
- WINEMAKER: John "Johnny" Graham, founder, with Ricardo Pinto Nunes as head winemaker across Churchill's portfolio
- VARIETY: Loureiro, Trajadura, and Arinto
- TERROIR: Sousa sub-region of the Vinho Verde DOC, northern Portugal — known for granite-based soils and a cool, Atlantic-influenced climate that favors lighter, saline, high-acid whites.
- VINIFICATION: Stainless steel
- TASTING NOTES: Bright citrine color with a light, natural spritz. The nose shows sea breeze and salinity alongside lime pith, green apple, and notes of stone fruit. Young and vibrant on the palate, with juicy, fresh flavors and a crisp, lively acidity.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Fish, seafood, and white meat dishes.
