Idlewild ‘The Bee’ Arneis Blend, North Coast, California 2023
Idlewild is Sam Bilbro’s project, built on his early years in the restaurant trade and a formative exposure to the wines of Piedmont. The winery makes Piedmontese varieties from elevated vineyards in Mendocino and Sonoma counties, aiming for depth and vibrancy with minimal intervention and an emphasis on the vineyard.
- Winemaker: Sam Bilbro
- Farming: Practicing Organic
- Variety: Arneis, Muscat Canelli, Favorita, Erbaluce, Cortese
- Terroir: Fruit from three vineyards. Fox Hill Vineyard in central Mendocino has rocky, elevated slopes planted to 20–30-year-old vines. Lost Hills Ranch in the Yorkville Highlands sits on schist-veined sandstone, with vines about 15 years old. Las Cimas, above the middle Russian River Valley, has steep slopes of fractured sandstone and quartz.
- Vinification: Whole-cluster pressed. Fermented with native yeast and left on all lees and solids. Native secondary fermentation.
- Aging: Four months on the lees in neutral oak.
- Tasting Notes: Orange blossom and wet stone, with lemon peel and orchard pear. Moderate weight and a lithe, nearly rainwater-light palate, with a phenolic edge that gives way to a crisp, clean finish.
- Food Pairings: Shellfish, white fish, roast chicken and fresh goat cheese.
