Idlewild ‘The Bird' Barbera Blend, North Coast, California 2023
Idlewild is Sam Bilbro’s project, rooted in Piedmontese varieties grown in Mendocino and Sonoma, with a focus on vineyard-led farming and minimal-intervention winemaking. The Bird is inspired by the everyday house wines of Italy: light, fresh and structured enough to pair with a wide range of food.
- Winemaker: Sam Bilbro
- Farming: Practicing Organic
- Variety: Barbera 43%, Dolcetto 38%, Grignolino 10%, Freisa 5%, Nebbiolo 4%
- Terroir: Fruit from three sites. Fox Hill Vineyard, on the Talmage Bench southeast of Ukiah, has well-drained gravel and sandstone soils. Lost Hills Ranch in the Yorkville Highlands sits on schist-veined sandstone. A newer Russian River Valley site adds fresh fruit and spice.
- Vinification: Largely whole cluster. Each fermentation began with carbonic maceration, but the wines were not taken fully carbonic. They were then trodden to shift into a standard fermentation. Pressed slightly early to keep tannins firm for a shorter barrel stay.
- Aging: Four months in neutral oak.
- Tasting Notes: Dark cherry, iron, warm spice, dried herbs, violets and graphite on the nose. Bright and juicy, with chewy, savoury depth, lavender and orange peel. Finishes with firm acid and tannin balance.
- Food Pairings: Pasta with tomato or meat sauce, charcuterie, roast poultry and grilled meats.
