Jacopo Biondi Santi 'Castello di Montepò' Morellino di Scansano, Maremma, Tuscany, Italy 2021
$80.00
Regular price $50.00The Biondi Santi name is inseparable from the birth of Brunello di Montalcino — the family isolated the Sangiovese Grosso clone that defined the appellation and has shaped its style for five generations. In the early 1980s, Jacopo Biondi Santi struck out on his own, acquiring the 11th-century Castello di Montepò in the Maremma, roughly twenty miles south of Montalcino and just ten miles from the Tyrrhenian coast. There he planted the family's proprietary BBS11 clone across the estate's galestro-rich hillsides, betting that Scansano could become to his generation what Montalcino was to his grandfather's. Today his son Tancredi runs the estate day to day, continuing a project built on meticulous site selection and an unwavering commitment to the family's historic clone.
- WINEMAKER: Jacopo Biondi Santi, with Tancredi Biondi Santi directing day-to-day winemaking
- VARIETY: Predominantly Sangiovese Grosso (BBS11 clone), complemented by a small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon
- FARMING: Organic
- TERROIR: Morellino di Scansano DOCG, in the Maremma along Tuscany's coastal hinterland. The 600-hectare Castello di Montepò estate sits on galestro — the schistous clay soil prized throughout central Tuscany — with vineyards benefiting from Mediterranean-tempered breezes off the nearby coast.
- VINIFICATION: Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place in stainless steel, with extended maceration to maximize polyphenol extraction for structure and aging potential.
- AGING: Approximately 8 months in barrique.
- TASTING NOTES: Intense ruby red with garnet reflections. Sour cherry and tart raspberry lead on the nose, joined by peony, iris, and a savory edge of malted chocolate. The palate echoes the red fruit before unfurling into earth, wild herb, licorice, and coffee, closing on a warm, simmering finish that speaks to real aging potential for a Morellino.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Grilled meats, wild boar ragù, aged pecorino, or dishes built around Tuscan herbs and cured pork.
- SCORES: 95 Points, Decanter. 93 Points, Wine Enthusiast
