Josep Ventosa Brut Rosé Cava, Penèdes, Spain NV
The Ventosa-Mañé family has been producing wine and Cava in the Penedès since 1941, living through the full arc of Cava's evolution from regional tradition to international denomination. Their estate vineyards, ranging from 25 to 55 years of age, are sited on the east- and south-facing plateaus of the Penedès, maximizing sun exposure and achieving consistent ripeness across varieties. The family has long placed emphasis on ecological viticulture and innovative winemaking in equal measure, a philosophy reflected across their small-production range. The house is imported in the United States by Cardel Wines.
- WINEMAKER: Josep Ventosa
- FARMING: Sustainable; the family references ecological and natural viticulture practices.
- VARIETY: 50% Trepat, 50% Pinot Noir. Trepat is a native Catalan red grape historically associated with Cava rosé production, prized for its light color, fresh acidity, and red fruit aromatics.
- TERROIR: Penedès, within the D.O. Cava production zone. Vineyards situated on the Penedès plateau at east and south-facing exposures on limestone soils, providing good drainage and natural acidity. The Penedès benefits from a Mediterranean climate moderated by altitude, with warm summers, cool nights, and mild winters. Vines 25–55 years old.
- VINIFICATION: Hand-harvested in September. Destemmed and crushed; temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel at 14–16°C for approximately three weeks. Traditional method (Méthode Traditionnelle): base wine bottled with addition of yeast and sugar (liqueur de tirage) to initiate secondary fermentation in bottle. Base vintage: 2019.
- AGING: 14 months on the lees in bottle. Production: 5,000 bottles.
- TASTING NOTES: Cherry-pink with lively violet highlights and fine, persistent bubbles. The nose is fruity and expressive, with wild strawberry, red berry, and a floral lift characteristic of Trepat. The palate is fresh and balanced with soft tannins, gentle acidity, and a clean, harmonious finish.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Aperitif, grilled fish and shellfish, charcuterie, white and red meats, fresh cheeses.
