La Giana Pinot Grigio, Friuli, Italy 2024
La Giana is a negociant label owned by Giuliana Imports and produced by the Anselmi family on their estate in Friuli Venezia Giulia. The family's viticultural history on the property begins with Ettore Anselmi, who planted the farm to vines in 1937 and began selling wine in the markets of Udine, Trieste, Verona, and Venice after the Second World War. Today the estate is managed by Ettore's grandsons Giuseppe and Luigi, the latter a graduate of the prestigious enology school of San Michele all'Adige in Trentino, with additional experience at estates in Piedmont and Tuscany. The Anselmi family farms 400 hectares in total, of which 90 are planted to vine; the balance is dedicated to grains, apples, and vegetables. The southern boundary of the property is delineated by the Stella River, a protected natural corridor flowing to the Adriatic. Estate holdings are divided between the Latisana sub-zone of the Friuli DOC and a smaller parcel in the Collio DOC on the Slovenian border.
- WINEMAKER: Luigi Anselmi
- FARMING: Sustainable. No pesticides or fungicides used. Cover crops and mowing maintained for vineyard health. Dry farmed. Soils are calcareous clay marl. Vineyards in the Latisana sub-zone (southwest of Collio Orientale del Friuli) and in Collio, at the Slovenian border in the foothills.
- VARIETY: 95% Pinot Grigio, 5% Friulano. 100% estate fruit. The Friulano component adds textural weight and balanced acidity to the blend.
- TERROIR: The Latisana sub-zone occupies the southwestern lowland plain of Friuli, with alluvial soils of marl and clay deposited by the Stella and Tagliamento rivers. The area benefits from Adriatic maritime influence to the south and alpine air drainage from the north, producing conditions favorable for aromatic freshness and natural acidity in white varieties. The Collio holdings, in the higher-elevation foothills along the Slovenian border, contribute additional mineral character and structural definition.
- VINIFICATION: Grapes destemmed and crushed in a nitrogen-rich environment to prevent oxidation. Cold fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve aromatic precision. No malolactic fermentation.
- AGING: 3 months sur lie in stainless steel tanks prior to bottling. No oak contact.
- TASTING NOTES: Pale straw with silver highlights. The nose is clean and fragrant with white peach, pear, lemon zest, and a light floral note. The palate is soft and approachable, with gentle acidity, a rounded mid-palate texture from the Friulano component, and a clean, refreshing finish.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Seafood, light pasta dishes, salads, grilled vegetables, fresh mozzarella, aperitif.
