Luddite 'Estate' Chenin Blanc, Bot River, South Africa 2024
Luddite was founded by Niels and Penny Verburg, who purchased a small property on a hill in the Bot River region in 1999 and released their first wines in 2000. Their ethos is captured in the winery's motto: "Technology and mechanisation will never be a substitute for passion." Penny manages the vineyards; Niels makes the wine with minimal intervention and a deep distrust of shortcuts. Their daughter Alice joined the operation in 2017. Luddite is best known internationally for its Shiraz, but the Estate Chenin Blanc — made exclusively from fruit grown on the family farm — is produced in far smaller quantities and is arguably the more singular expression of the property. It is one of Bot River's most distinctive wines: lean, structured, and marked by extended skin contact that sets it apart from the broader category.
- WINEMAKER: Niels Verburg, with Alice Verburg
- FARMING: Estate-grown. Single property, Bot River, Sustainable.
- VARIETY: 100% Chenin Blanc
- TERROIR: The Luddite estate sits on the eastern slopes of the Houw Hoek Mountains within the Walker Bay Wine Ward, approximately 30km from the Atlantic Ocean. Bot River is one of South Africa's cooler Chenin Blanc regions, with afternoon cloud and wind funneling through the mountain passes off the nearby ocean, slowing ripening and preserving acidity. The region's soils include decomposed granite and shale, giving wines a mineral, saline character distinct from warmer Chenin-producing areas.
- VINIFICATION: 30% of the Chenin Blanc left on skins for 30 days in open fermenters. Natural fermentation. No fining or filtration.
- AGING: 12 months in old oak. 11.37% alcohol.
- TASTING NOTES: Citrus, stone fruit, potpourri, cinnamon, and ginger on the nose with a subtle waxy complexity. The palate is lean and tightly wound, with punchy acidity and a dry, lightly grippy finish from the extended skin contact. Structured and cerebral rather than immediately generous — a wine built for the table and for time.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Roast pork with herbs, aged hard cheese, grilled snoek, braised chicken.
