Matthiasson ‘Linda Vista Vineyard’ Chardonnay, Oak Knoll District, Napa Valley, California 2024
Jill and Steve Matthiasson founded their family winery in 2003 after years in sustainable agriculture and the local food movement. The estate farms organically and makes classically structured wines in moderate alcohol. Linda Vista is a vineyard behind their home, leased in 2011 and converted to organic farming.
- Winemaker: Steve Matthiasson
- Farming: Certified Organic (CCOF)
- Variety: Chardonnay
- Terroir: Oak Knoll District, Napa Valley. A site on the western side of the district, near the city of Napa, planted in 1989. Marine-origin clay soils. Cool winds preserve acidity while the Napa sun adds ripeness.
- Vinification: Gently whole-cluster pressed. Blended from eight harvest dates, with earlier picks adding acidity and minerality and later picks adding body. Fermented with native yeast in barrel. One third of the barrels went through malolactic fermentation. No racking, with minimal bâtonnage on selected barrels.
- Aging: Aged on the lees in seasoned French oak barrels with no new oak.
- Tasting Notes: Meyer lemon and ripe orchard fruit, with yellow peach, musk melon and honey. Chalky, mineral and lively, with a creamy texture balanced by bright acidity and a clean finish.
- Food Pairings: Roast chicken with root vegetables, crab cakes, shellfish crudo and grilled pork chops.
- Scores: Decanter 95 (2024)
