Aslina 'ndubs Rosé', Swartland, Western Cape, South Africa 2025
Ntsiki Biyela is celebrated as one of South Africa's first Black female winemakers. She grew up in Mahlabathini, a rural village in KwaZulu-Natal, and received a scholarship to study winemaking at Stellenbosch University, graduating in 2003. She spent over a decade as winemaker at boutique winery Stellekaya before founding her own label, Aslina Wines, in 2016 — named after her late grandmother. In 2025 she launched the ndubs range, a more accessible, everyday line inspired by childhood memory and cultural heritage. The name derives from Indubela, a traditional Zulu sugar-water drink given as a restorative — a pick-me-up — and the wines are designed in that spirit: simple, joyful, and nourishing.
- WINEMAKER: Ntsiki Biyela
- FARMING: Hand-picked. Swartland fruit sourced from established growers.
- VARIETY: 100% Tempranillo
- TERROIR: The Swartland, located north of Cape Town, is one of South Africa's most celebrated dry-farmed regions, known for old bush vine Chenin Blanc grown on a diversity of schist, granite, and ironstone soils. The region's warm, dry Mediterranean climate, moderated by Atlantic breezes from the west, produces wines with ripe fruit character and natural freshness.
- VINIFICATION: Fermented in stainless steel.
- AGING: Stainless steel. 12.5% alcohol.
- TASTING NOTES: Aromas of fresh spanspek (sweet melon) and ripe strawberry with subtle earthy notes on the nose. Light and fruit-forward on the palate with lively acidity. Alcohol: 12.5%. Residual sugar: 2.3 g/L. Total acidity: 6.3 g/L.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Light salads, grilled seafood, mezze, soft cheeses, or enjoyed on its own as an aperitif.
