Paitin 'Elisa' Arneis, Roero, Piemonte, Italy 2024
One of Barbaresco's oldest estates, the Pasquero-Elia family has farmed the Serraboella cru in Neive since 1796 — eight generations rooted in the same soils, the same cellars, and an unwavering commitment to traditional Piedmontese viticulture. Best known for their benchmark Barbaresco from the Sorì Paitin parcel, the family also tends a single Arneis vineyard across the Tanaro River in Roero, a plot once cultivated by Elisa Elia, who managed the estate through the Second World War. Vinified for the first time by her son Secondo after her passing in 1973, the wine has carried her name ever since — a tribute to the woman who held the winery together through its most difficult years. Today the estate is managed by Giovanni and Silvano Pasquero-Elia alongside Giovanni's son Luca, with a certified organic approach across all 18 hectares.
WINEMAKER: Giovanni, Silvano, and Luca Pasquero-Elia
FARMING: Organic; sulphur and copper compounds only, no herbicides, all harvesting done by hand.
VARIETY: 100% Arneis
TERROIR: Roero DOCG, single vineyard in Varinere, commune of Priocca, Piedmont. Soils are sandy with white calcareous marl — more sandy in character than the clay-dominant soils of the Langhe across the Tanaro. South-southwest exposure at 200–240 meters elevation. Vines planted 1980, trained to Guyot.
VINIFICATION: Gentle press followed by fermentation with brief skin maceration of a couple of days. Wine remains on its lees for 6 months following fermentation.
AGING: Aged on lees for 6 months; no oak aging indicated.
TASTING NOTES: Fragrant with iris, lilac, and subtle passion fruit alongside a bitter citrus note. Delicate and harmonious on the palate with a lingering finish.
FOOD PAIRINGS: Shellfish, flaky white fish, herb frittata, pesto, fresh cheeses, prosciutto crudo. A natural aperitivo in the Piedmontese tradition.
