Pali Wine Co. 'Pali Vineyard' Sparkling Chenin Blanc, Sta. Rita Hills, Santa Barbara County, California 2023
Pickup currently unavailable
Pali Wine Co. was founded in 2005 by Tim and Judy Perr, who named the winery after their Pacific Palisades hometown as a tribute to the community that shaped their lives. After nearly a decade sourcing fruit from iconic Central Coast vineyards — Fiddlestix, Rancho La Viña, Bien Nacido, Cargasacchi — they planted their own 50-acre estate in the northwesternmost corner of the Sta. Rita Hills in 2012. Aaron Walker has served as winemaker since 2007. The second generation of the Perr family — son Nick and his wife Carmen — has extended the estate's mission through the Neighborhood label, focused on natural, wild-fermented wines. The Chenin Blanc at Pali Vineyard was grafted in 2022 following Pierce's disease losses in the Pinot Noir blocks; the 2023 vintage marks its inaugural release and is believed to be the only Chenin Blanc grown in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA.
- WINEMAKER: Aaron Walker
- FARMING: S.I.P. Certified Sustainable. Estate-grown, Pali Vineyard, Sta. Rita Hills, Santa Barbara County. Grafted 2022; 50-acre estate planted 2012.
- VARIETY: 100% Chenin Blanc
- TERROIR: Pali Vineyard occupies the northwesternmost and most ocean-exposed corner of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, where the Santa Ynez River corridor funnels cold Pacific air and marine fog deep into the valley. Sandy soils — remnants of an ancient seabed — are extremely well-drained and low-fertility, stressing vines toward concentrated, high-acid fruit. The Sta. Rita Hills is best known for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of exceptional acidity and cool-climate precision; Chenin Blanc in this environment is an exceptionally rare proposition, expressing what the winery describes as "oceanic qualities."
- VINIFICATION: Méthode Champenoise. Base wine fermented with native yeasts. Secondary fermentation in bottle.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Oysters, ceviche, grilled fish, fresh goat cheese, aperitif.
