Scribe 'Along the Palms' Chardonnay, Sonoma Valley, California 2023
Scribe Winery sits on a 200-plus-acre property in the foothills of Sonoma's Arrowhead Mountain first planted to vine in 1858 by German immigrant Emil Dresel — among the earliest pre-Prohibition vineyard sites in Sonoma Valley. After decades of disuse, including a stint as a turkey farm, fourth-generation California farmers Andrew and Adam Mariani acquired the property in 2007 and set about restoring both the vineyard and the estate's historic 19th-century hacienda. The brothers farm with a non-interventionist, ecosystem-first philosophy, and Along the Palms is their un-oaked, everyday expression of Sonoma Valley Chardonnay.
WINEMAKER: Andrew and Adam Mariani
FARMING: Practicing Organic; California Certified Sustainable Winegrowing
VARIETY: 100% Chardonnay
TERROIR: Sonoma Valley AVA. Fruit sourced from Sonoma Valley sites on Huichica loam soils (this vintage supplemented with purchased fruit beyond the estate vineyard). 2023 was one of the latest-ripening vintages in 20 years, with harvest beginning September 1st, roughly three weeks behind the prior year.
VINIFICATION: Long, cold fermentation in stainless steel and concrete, with malolactic conversion to preserve freshness and vibrancy.
AGING: Aged on heavy lees until bottling to build texture and depth; no oak.
TASTING NOTES: Crisp and energetic, with pineapple and orange zest layered over a touch of sea-spray minerality. Vibrant and floral, with stone fruit character and bright acidity throughout.
FOOD PAIRINGS: Oysters, shellfish, sushi, or fresh goat cheese.
