Torii Mor Pinot Gris, Willamette Valley, Oregon 2024
Torii Mor was founded by Dr. Donald Olson, who moved to Oregon in pursuit of Old World-style Pinot Noir. He purchased a vineyard planted in 1972 in the Dundee Hills, renamed it Olson Estate Vineyard, and produced his first vintage in 1993 with just 1,000 cases. The name Torii Mor derives from the Torii gate in the property's Japanese garden and the ancient Scandinavian word for earth — together a nod to Pinot Noir's expression of terroir and connection to the land. Today the winery produces 10,000 cases annually, sourcing fruit from vineyards across the Willamette, Umpqua, and Rogue Valleys, with its Pinot Gris program centered on Kraemer Vineyard in the broader Willamette Valley appellation.
- WINEMAKER: Jon Tomaselli
- FARMING: LIVE Certified (Olson Estate Vineyard); LEED Gold Certified winery
- VARIETY: 100% Pinot Gris
- TERROIR: Sourced entirely from Kraemer Vineyard, near Silverton in the Willamette Valley AVA. The 2024 growing season brought a cool, wet spring followed by a warm, dry summer, with harvest beginning September 18 and concluding October 2 across the valley. Kraemer Vineyard fruit was hand-harvested October 13 and 22 at 20 Brix.
- VINIFICATION: Hand-harvested and whole-cluster pressed directly to stainless steel tanks. Inoculated with three distinct yeast strains — D47, X16, and Delta — selected to accentuate ripe fruit character and build aromatic complexity. Fermentation lasted 30 days. Aged on lees without malolactic fermentation, then cold stabilized, filtered, and bottled.
- AGING: Stainless steel throughout. 13.1% abv. 1,184 cases produced.
- TASTING NOTES: Light golden in color with forward aromas of fresh grapefruit, tropical fruit, and white flowers. The palate is juicy and mouth-filling, with ripe pear, stone fruit, and a lingering finish of honey and ginger. Bright, refreshing acidity with a touch of residual sweetness.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Dungeness crab, spicy Thai curry, grilled halibut, fresh pasta with cream sauce.
