Vino Volta 'Methode Ancestral' Grenache, Swan Valley, Western Australia 2023
Vino Volta was founded in 2018 by Garth Cliff and Kristen McGann in Western Australia's Swan Valley — Australia's oldest wine region and, in Cliff's view, its most underestimated. After two decades making wine across Australia and the United States, including a decade at Houghton, one of the Swan's most storied producers, Cliff set out to prove what the region's old-vine Chenin Blanc and Grenache could do when treated with rigor and ambition. Where 'Funky & Fearless' pursues richness and texture through oak fermentation, 'Nothing Wrong with Old Skool' takes a deliberately simpler line: great old-vine fruit, clean fermentation, bottled bright to preserve varietal character and the Swan's signature acidity.
- WINEMAKER: Garth Cliff
- FARMING: Dry-grown (unirrigated). Grenache was sourced from an old Swan Valley Vineyard of gravel and sand over coffee rock.
- VARIETY: 100% Grenache
- TERROIR: The Gingin vineyard, located north of the Swan Valley proper, provides fruit with pronounced freshness and natural acidity. Sandy loam soils over the Swan Coastal Plain retain heat through the day but drain well, maintaining vine stress and concentration. Cooling sea breezes from the Indian Ocean temper the warm continental conditions of Western Australia's interior.
- VINIFICATION: Whole bunch pressed, fermented simply in tank to preserve bright primary fruit, natural acidity, and varietal character.
- AGING: Minimal; bottled to retain freshness.
- TASTING NOTES: Super fruity with raspberry, mulberry, and other berry notes. Palate is creamy with cidery notes.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Cured charcuterie, soft washed-rind cheese, Margherita pizza, grilled vegetables, herb-roasted chicken, briny olives and pickles.
