Vin des Amis' is Clape’s most easygoing bottling, but make no mistake—this is still pure northern Rhône Syrah, grown on granite soils and crafted with the same traditional methods as their flagship Cornas. Originally made just for family and friends (hence the name), it’s now a cult favorite that captures the soul of the region in a more youthful frame.
-
WINEMAKER: Pierre-Marie and Olivier Clape
-
FARMING: Practicing organic; all work is done manually
-
VARIETY: 100% Syrah
-
TERROIR: Sourced from young vines on granite soils just outside the Cornas AOC, within the Rhône Valley. Vineyards sit on similar decomposed granite (gore) soils at high elevation, offering freshness and aromatic lift.
-
VINIFICATION: 100% whole-cluster fermentation with native yeasts in concrete vats. Gentle extraction through daily punchdowns and pumpovers.
-
AGING: Aged 6–8 months in older foudres and demi-muids. No new oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
-
TASTING NOTES: Vivid and spicy, with bright aromas of crushed blackberry, violet, black pepper, and smoked herbs. The palate is juicy and energetic, with fine tannins, savory spice, and a mineral snap on the finish.
-
FOOD PAIRINGS: Grilled sausages, roast chicken with herbs, lentil stew, or charred vegetables with romesco
-
SCORES:
-
Wine Advocate (2022): 90 – “Brimming with energy and northern Rhône character, this is a delicious and approachable Syrah that punches above its classification.”
-
Jancis Robinson: 16.5/20 – “As honest and soulful as its name suggests. A Syrah for the table, not the cellar.”
-
Kermit Lynch (Importer): “Like a Cornas on its day off—serious bones under a friendly smile.”
