Villa Sant’Anna is a small, family-run estate in the hills near Montepulciano, directed by Simona Ruggeri and her daughters, Anna and Margherita. Their work focuses on traditional Tuscan varietals grown with respect for the land, combining classic cellar techniques with restrained modernization to preserve the purity and liveliness of Sangiovese from the Colli Senesi hills.
- WINEMAKER: Simona Ruggeri (with Anna & Margherita Ruggeri)
- FARMING: Lutte raisonnée / sustainable; hand-tended vines with limited, targeted treatments and green harvesting for yield control.
- VARIETY: Approximately 80% Sangiovese, 10% Canaiolo, 10% other native red varietals.
- TERROIR: Vineyards lie on a mix of limestone-clay (albarese) and schistous galestro soils surrounding Montepulciano, planted between 300–400 meters elevation. Vines range from 3 to 50 years old and are trained Guyot at a density of roughly 3,000–6,000 vines per hectare.
-
VINIFICATION:
The grapes are hand-harvested and fully destemmed before undergoing spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in stainless steel and concrete vats. Maceration typically lasts around fifteen days, with temperatures reaching up to 30 °C and daily pumpovers and délestage to encourage gentle extraction. After fermentation, malolactic conversion occurs naturally in concrete tanks. The wine is racked and lightly clarified before being transferred to oak for maturation. -
AGING:
The Chianti Colli Senesi ages for approximately twelve months in large 30–39 hl Slavonian oak botti, allowing slow integration of tannins without overt oak influence. It is then rested in bottle for an additional three to six months prior to release. The wine is unfined and lightly filtered at bottling, with minimal sulfur additions throughout the process. -
TASTING NOTES:
Lively and expressive, showing bright red cherry, cranberry, and wild strawberry alongside subtle notes of dried herbs, leather, and tobacco leaf. Medium-bodied with vibrant acidity and fine tannins, it finishes with a mineral edge that captures the character of the Sienese hills. -
FOOD PAIRINGS:
Ideal with tomato-based pastas, grilled pork sausages, roasted vegetables, or pecorino Toscano.
