Cuvée name refers to the “Mother Blocks” — the source vineyards for Chalmers’ nursery vines, where over 30 Italian varieties are grown sustainably under the Murray Darling’s vast red sands and blue skies.
The Chalmers family are pioneers of Italian grape varieties in Australia, having introduced and propagated over 50 unique clones across the country. Their Mother Block range showcases sustainably farmed estate fruit from their Murray Darling property, capturing the vibrancy and drinkability of Mediterranean-inspired blends crafted for everyday enjoyment.
- WINEMAKER: Kim and Tennille Chalmers
- FARMING: Certified Sustainable (Sustainable Winegrowing Australia); the Mother Blocks are the original vine source for the Chalmers nursery, dry-farmed on red Murray sand and limestone.
- VARIETY: Based on Nero d’Avola, Sagrantino, and Teroldego with a touch of Sangiovese.
- TERROIR: Warm, semi-arid Murray Darling region in northwest Victoria. Soils of red Murray sand over limestone at 42–48 meters elevation provide excellent drainage and moderate vine stress, resulting in aromatic concentration and supple tannin.
- VINIFICATION: Co-fermented and field-blended, picked and pressed into stainless steel and fermented to dryness with native yeasts. The wine remains on lees and ages in tank for six months to build texture and complexity. Vegan friendly.
- AGING: 6 months in stainless steel tank on fine lees.
- TASTING NOTES: Lifted and aromatic with wild strawberry, dark cherry, and plum layered over forest floor, shiitake, and orange zest. The palate is bright and juicy, showing cranberry, tart plum, and cherry skin with hints of star anise and Szechuan pepper. Fine, sandy tannins add structure without weight, keeping the wine lively and easy to drink.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Perfect with crumbed lamb cutlets, spaghetti bolognese, or grilled vegetables. Serve at cellar temperature (around 18°C).
- ALCOHOL: 13%
