Luis Seabra’s ‘Mono’ series explores single-variety, single-origin expressions of native Portuguese grapes through a low-intervention, terroir-focused lens. ‘Mono A’ is 100% Alfrocheiro—an indigenous grape known for its deep color, savory profile, and firm structure—grown in the high-altitude granitic soils of the Dão. It’s a pure, lifted, and thoughtfully restrained take on a grape that’s often blended.
-
WINEMAKER: Luis Seabra
-
FARMING: Sustainable and practicing organic
-
VARIETY: 100% Alfrocheiro
-
TERROIR: Sourced from granitic soils at elevations of 500–600m in the Serra da Estrela subregion of the Dão DOC, one of Portugal’s highest and coolest winegrowing zones. The altitude and granite lend freshness, fine tannin, and mineral precision.
-
VINIFICATION: Grapes are hand-harvested and partially destemmed. Fermented spontaneously with native yeasts in open-top tanks, using gentle extraction.
-
AGING: Aged for 12 months in used 225L and 500L French oak barrels (no new oak). Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
-
TASTING NOTES: Aromas of black cherry, bay leaf, dried rose, and crushed granite. The palate is medium-bodied and savory, with notes of wild berries, black tea, and a firm, chalky tannin structure. A nervy, energetic red with aging potential and real varietal clarity.
-
FOOD PAIRINGS: Grilled quail, roast pork with herbs, mushroom risotto, or aged Serra cheese
-
SCORES:
-
Wine Advocate: 93 – “Precise, taut, and expressive. A brilliant varietal bottling from one of Portugal’s most thoughtful winemakers.”
