Founded by David Ramey in 1996, Ramey Wine Cellars helped define the modern California Chardonnay style—emphasizing texture, balance, and site transparency. With fruit drawn from remote ridgelines in the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA, this bottling reflects the cool coastal intensity of Sonoma’s far western edge.
-
WINEMAKER: David Ramey, Cameron Frey, Lydia Cummins
-
FARMING: Sustainable
-
VARIETY: 100% Chardonnay
-
TERROIR: Sourced from several vineyard sites within Fort Ross-Seaview, planted between 1969 and 2006 on Goldridge Loam soils. Sites include Westside Farms, Dutton, Kilcullen, Woolsey Road, and Rochioli Allen, using UC Davis clone 4 as well as Wente and Dijon selections. These cool-climate, low-vigor sites lie just miles from the Pacific.
-
VINIFICATION: Whole cluster pressed for phenolic delicacy. Native yeast fermentation and full native malolactic conversion occur in barrel, with regular bâtonnage to build texture.
-
AGING: Aged 12 months in French oak barrels (20% new), followed by an additional 6 months in tank for harmonization. Bottled without filtration.
-
TASTING NOTES: The 2022 Fort Ross-Seaview Chardonnay shows aromatic complexity and depth, with Meyer lemon, white peach, flint, and hazelnut. Rich yet restrained on the palate, with a long mineral finish and balanced acidity.
-
FOOD PAIRINGS: Pair with lobster rolls, roast chicken with tarragon, seared scallops, or Comté.
-
SCORES:
95 points – Wine Advocate
94 points – Jeb Dunnuck
93 points – Vinous
